SED Considers Plan to Mandate Govt Employees to Enroll Their Children in Government Schools

Srinagar: The School Education Department (SED) of Jammu and Kashmir is currently reviewing a proposal that would require government employees to enroll their children in government schools. The move is aimed at boosting student enrollment and strengthening public education.

According to documents reportedly accessed by JKNS, the proposal is under active consideration, and the department has sought opinions from key stakeholders such as the Director SCERT, Secretary JKBOSE, Directors of School Education (Jammu and Kashmir), and the Project Director of Samagra Shiksha.

This initiative follows a detailed appeal from a resident of Doda, who expressed concerns and provided suggestions regarding the proposal. The representation has been forwarded to senior officials and Chief Education Officers (CEOs) in the Jammu region for their input.

An official communication from the department’s Under Secretary has asked educational authorities to share their feedback promptly. The CEO of Udhampur has already distributed the proposal to zonal officers and school heads, requesting their response within three days.

Departmental sources say the objective is to rebuild public confidence in government schools by setting an example and encouraging active involvement from government employees in the system they work for.

The Doda resident’s letter also calls for measures to improve the quality of education, including competency tests for Rehbar-e-Taleem (ReT) teachers and stricter oversight of school operations, student enrollment, and infrastructure. It also emphasizes the need for transparency in teacher qualifications and recruitment, urging that only competent and deserving candidates remain in the education system. (JKNS)
