Kashmir Schools, Colleges and Universities to Reopen Monday After Week-Long Closure

0

All educational institutions across the Kashmir region will reopen on Monday after a week-long closure. The government made the decision after reviewing the situation in the region. Schools, colleges, and universities in all districts of Kashmir will now resume normal academic activities.

Education Minister Sakina Itoo confirmed the development on Sunday. She said the administration assessed the ground situation before allowing institutions to reopen. According to the minister, the environment is now suitable for students and staff to return to campuses.

The government had ordered the temporary closure of educational institutions last week as a precautionary step. Authorities took the decision to ensure the safety of students amid protests that erupted in parts of Jammu and Kashmir.

The reopening also coincides with the end of winter vacations for many students in Kashmir. Schools up to class 8 will reopen after a winter break of more than two months. Earlier, students from classes 9 to 12 had already resumed academic activities on February 23 following winter holidays of more than 70 days.

The School Education Department had earlier announced winter vacations in a phased manner for institutions in the Kashmir division and winter zones of the Jammu division. According to the department’s schedule, vacations for pre-primary classes started from November 26 and continued until February 28.

For middle classes up to class 8, winter holidays were observed from December 1 to February 28. Meanwhile, classes 9 to 12 remained closed from December 11 to February 22.

Teaching staff were instructed to remain available for academic work during the vacation period if required. Teachers were also directed to report back to their respective schools on February 20 to prepare campuses for reopening and academic activities.

Colleges in the Kashmir Valley had already resumed activities earlier. The Higher Education Department had announced a 52-day winter vacation for degree colleges located in the winter zones of Kashmir division.

According to the official schedule, degree colleges observed winter vacations from December 24, 2025, to February 14, 2026. Academic activities in these colleges resumed from February 16.

With schools, colleges, and universities reopening across the region, normal academic activities are expected to continue in Kashmir from Monday. Students and teachers will return to classrooms after the temporary closure and winter vacation period.
