Heavy Rains, Flash Flood Risk in Jammu & Kashmir from August 23–26: MeT Issues Warning


 

The Meteorological Centre Srinagar has issued a weather advisory, warning of heavy rainfall and flash flood risk across several districts of Jammu and Kashmir between August 23 and 26.


According to officials, the region will experience light to moderate rain and thundershowers, with some areas likely to face intense to very heavy rainfall. Districts such as Jammu, Reasi, Udhampur, Samba, Kathua, Rajouri, Anantnag, and Kulgam are expected to witness the heaviest spells, while Poonch, Ramban, Doda, and Kishtwar may also see moderate to heavy downpours.


Advisory and Risks


The department has cautioned of possible cloudbursts, flash floods, landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones in vulnerable areas. Residents have been advised to:


“Stay away from rivers, streams, and flood-prone nallahs. Avoid traveling on landslide-prone routes during peak rainfall hours. Exercise extra caution near unstable structures and mountainous terrain.”

Weather Timeline


August 20–22: Mostly hot and humid with brief showers; isolated heavy rains likely on August 22 night in parts of Jammu division.


August 23–26: Peak wet spell with widespread rainfall and risk of flooding, especially in hilly and low-lying areas.


August 27–30: Conditions expected to ease; hot and humid weather to return with only occasional showers.


Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and follow official advisories to avoid untoward incidents during this high-risk weather phase.
