England’s four wicket win over New Zealand has kept Pakistan’s semi final hopes alive in the T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8 stage.

The match at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo carried huge importance for Pakistan. England had already secured a semi final berth, but their victory prevented New Zealand from sealing qualification. As a result, Pakistan remain in the race for the second semi final spot from Super 8 Group 2.

New Zealand have completed their Super 8 matches with three points from three games and a Net Run Rate of +1.390. Pakistan have one point from two matches with a Net Run Rate of -0.461 and one game left to play.

Now the equation is simple.

If Pakistan defeat Sri Lanka in their final Super 8 clash and improve their Net Run Rate beyond New Zealand’s, they will qualify for the semi finals with three points. If they fail to do so, New Zealand will advance.

For Pakistan to overtake New Zealand on Net Run Rate, they must:

• Win by at least 64 runs if they bat first

• Chase the target within 13.1 overs if they bat second

Earlier in the Super 8 round, Pakistan and New Zealand shared points after their match was washed out due to rain. New Zealand later defeated Sri Lanka by 61 runs, while Pakistan lost narrowly to England by two wickets.

Had New Zealand beaten England, they would have moved to five points and confirmed their semi final place, eliminating Pakistan. England’s victory has now ensured that the final qualification from Group 2 will depend on Pakistan’s last match against Sri Lanka.

If Pakistan win, both teams will finish on three points, and the side with the superior Net Run Rate will progress to the knockouts.
